Job Title: Mortgage Underwriter (12 Months FTC)

Location: Harpenden

Salary: £35,000 – £42,000

Hours: Monday – Friday (Part time hours considered)

About the role

As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will risk assess and underwrite mortgage applications in accordance to our clients lending policy and risk appetite and to deliver the highest level of customer service so that our clients lending achieves goals in their strategic plan.

Responsibilities for the role of Mortgage Underwriter

  • Process all mortgage applications and support as required across the whole mortgage team
  • All aspects of risk assessment and manual underwriting of mortgage lending applications
  • Responsible for ensuring that all decisions adhere to our clients lending policy
  • Act in accordance with any mortgage underwriting mandate given
  • To provide recommendation to a more senior mandate holder in respect to cases outside of mandate held
  • Liaise closely with other members of the mortgage team and provide clear underwriting guidance
  • Escalations are made when necessary to higher mandate holders, the risk department or senior management when necessary
  • To be actively involved with training of new mortgage underwriters
  • Complete all assigned regulatory training
  • Support the underwriting manager as required with the completion of updates to the lending policy in draft format
  • Adhere to procedures and suggest changes for consideration when appropriate
  • Adhere to our client’s brand and communication strategies
  • Must comply with the FCA’s conduct rules
  • Maintain a working knowledge of legislative, regulatory and financial framework in which our client works

Experience required for the role of Mortgage Underwriter

  • CeMap qualified with manual underwriting experience for a lender preferably with competency of underwriting complex prime mortgages
  • Initiative to proactively make responsible lending decisions
  • Understands and has knowledge of the relevant compliance and regulation requirements
  • High level of customer service with a passion to deliver the highest level of service to internal and external customers
  • Excellent levels of numeracy and literacy with a high attention to detail
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills
