Salary: Up to £30,000

Hours: Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 5 pm

About the Role:

As a Litigation Officer, you will manage residential mortgage accounts in serious arrears undergoing litigation with proactive communication strategies. You will engage with customers to understand their situations while ensuring fair treatment throughout the litigation process. The successful candidate will need to have a good understanding of the litigation process, have gained experience in customer services or collections and will have the ability with training to agree on fair outcomes for the customer.


  • Manage a caseload of accounts through the Litigation and Term expiry process.
  • Understand the terms and conditions of a borrower’s loan so that they may be clearly explained to, and met by, the borrower
  • Ensure information relating to borrowers and their loans is current and accurately recorded on internal systems
  • Ensure that customers are correctly informed of payments due, and that the collection of the required payment is made accurately and by BACS rules and those that are subject to a Court Order
  • Report problem issues accurately, proactively and in a timely and professional manner, making recommendations as necessary and expressing balanced and technical opinions
  • Manage any arrears and associated risks with borrowers to re-establish the loan to a performing basis, including taking inbound and making outbound calls from customers in arrears, analysing customer information to understand what the best outcome is for their circumstances, drafting referrals to Team Leaders, Managers or Clients by mandate levels
  • Ensure the correct processes are being followed for all work undertaken, highlighting any suggested improvements or additions to your line manager.
  • Liaise professionally with clients, third parties and other areas of the business. Strategic Focus
  • Identify and recommend enhancements to processes, procedures and systems and ensure the Servicing Manager, and Team Leader are engaged to oversee the change required.
  • Assist with projects as defined by the Team Leader by meeting agreed deadlines and achieving specific objectives. People Leadership
  • Meet all quality, productivity and performance-related targets.
  • Assist in working daily/weekly/monthly reports and ensure any required action is completed within the required timescales.

Experience required:

  • A minimum of one year’s continuous experience within mortgage debt collection to include loans in default at expiry
  • Good quality of written and verbal communication
  • Customer-focused – identify effective solutions for borrowers, internal clients and external clients
  • Knowledge and understanding of mortgage loan documentation would be highly desirable but not essential
  • Knowledge of the applicable regulations/codes governing the financial services industry
  • Understanding of financial budgets
  • Understanding of the UK Benefits System
  • Ability to work as an effective team member – be cooperative, support others and deliver what you promise
  • Ability to organise workload of self and team to meet deadlines
  • Desirable – Previous Litigation experience with a good understanding of court documentation
