About the role of Buy-To-Let Underwriter

Reporting to the Credit Operations Director, the role is responsible for underwriting and approving new BTL lending proposals in line with the Company Lending Policy, clearly communicating the rationale behind lending decisions to all relevant parties.

Manage a pipeline of cases in a fast-paced, pressured environment. Accurately assessing the risk attributed to the application ensures that the loan is both suitable and fit for purpose.

Communicate lending rationales to the Credit Committee for cases that fall outside of mandate and/or internal lending policy.

The Underwriter will work closely with BDM’s and Case Managers, BDM’s and Completion Managers in processing applications from inquiry to completion.

Responsibilities required for the role of Buy-To-Let Underwriter

  • Ensure new lending proposals are underwritten in line with the Lending Policy with any exceptions documented and approved by relevant senior signatories.
  • Present clear and concise lending recommendations to senior signatories for proposals that require exceptions or fall outside the parameters of the mandate.
  • Present Credit Papers to the Credit Committee for high-value transactions.
  • Participate in daily deal committees.
  • Assess and appraise valuation reports.
  • Liaise with intermediaries on new inquiries and proposals ensuring underwriting requirements and/or reasons for the decline are communicated clearly and effectively.
  • Work closely with Case Managers and Completions Managers to ensure reasons for underwriting requirements and special conditions are understood

Experience required for the role of Buy-To-Let Underwriter

  • Previous BTL underwriting experience.
  • Held a sole signatory mandate.
  • Experience of presenting proposals to senior signatories.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to articulate clear lending rationales and recommendations.
  • Confident in own decision-making abilities.
  • Pragmatic approach to lending.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Highly numerate.
  • Ideally will have knowledge of different property asset types, including; Houses in Multiple Occupation, Multi-unit Freehold Blocks, Office to residential – Permitted Development schemes
  • Comfortable working to tight deadlines and prioritising workloads
  • Experience of underwriting business received from brokers
